Microsoft Windows NT, Beta March 1993
Error: "Fatal System Error 0x0000006B" on IBM PS/1 or ValuePoint systems
at the conclusion of text based Setup during installation
The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified a problem
with the March Beta release of Windows NT.
On particular IBM PS/1 and PS/ValuePoint based systems, an error may occur
during installation. When the error message "Fatal System Error 0x0000006B"
on a blue screen appears, the installation of Windows NT is prevented.
This may occur after text Setup has completed and while graphical Setup is
loading. If you attempt to install on an IBM PS/1 or PS/ValuePoint machine,
you may experience this problem.
This behavior is due to a problem located in the special ATDISK.SYS driver
for IDE disk drives used in PS/1 and PS/ValuePoint machines only. For
some IDE drives, this driver attempts to access a second drive and receives
the above error while trying to access it. Our development and test groups
have a permanent solution for current product builds.
Note that if installation of Windows NT has been successful, you
do not need to apply this new driver. If you are unable to install on an
IBM PS/1 or PS/ValuePoint system and receive the system error, please follow
the instructions below.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please take the following steps to complete the installation if
you receive the "Fatal System Error 0x0000006B" on IBM PS/1 or
PS/ValuePoint systems at the conclusion of text based Setup.
1. Boot an alternate operating system that can access the Windows NT
system files which Windows NT Setup copied during text based Setup.
This can most easily be done by booting from an MS-DOS floppy boot disk or
an OS/2 technical reference diskette in the floppy boot drive. Power the
system off, then on.
2. Locate the Windows NT system files on your hard drive. For example,
C:
CD \WIN31\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
RENAME ATDISK.SYS ATDISK.OLD
3. Insert the floppy patch disk containing the update ATDISK.SYS. At the
command line type,
COPY A:ATDISK.SYS C:\WIN31\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS.
4. Remove all floppy diskettes from the floppy drive and press CTRL-ALT-DEL
to reboot the computer.
5. Continue with Windows NT Setup.
